The name of the brand Jaeger-LeCoultre is paired, its second part, which is also the oldest, was named after the founder Antoine LeCoultre. He started working in 1833 in the town of Le Santier, near Geneva. His ancestor was Pierre Lecoudre, who, as a Huguenot, fled France in 1559 for religious reasons.
Among the Huguenots persecuted by Catholics, there were a lot of progressive people with a good education and artisans with high qualifications, who formed small craft villages on the territory of Switzerland. This is how Le Sentier was formed, in which Antoine was born in 1803. Here, by the way, there were a lot of masters and firms of Swiss watches. Today it is safe to say that it was the religious intolerance of the French that caused Switzerland to become the world's leading watchmaking power. By the way, the very word "emigrant" appeared precisely during the flight of the Huguenots from their homeland.
The peculiarity of watchmaking in the Zhu Valley was that watchmakers here were divided into two categories - those who produced spare parts, and those who assembled ready-made watches from them. Young Antoine was one of the first, but he dreamed of combining production into a full cycle, and placing it under one roof. It was he who created the first self-sufficient enterprise in the country.
It all started in 1833 with a small production of gears for chronometer mechanisms, which had at its disposal a special machine developed by Antoine that grinds them. By the way, they were considered the best. Then such production was carried out manually, required a lot of labor and highly qualified specialists. Thus, the genius of LeCoultre manifested itself in the fact that he was the first to mechanize this process in accordance with the industrial revolution that was marching around the world.
Antoine LeCoultre was one of those who was a pioneer in the production of watches in the conditions of modern times. He designed and built machines that produce spare parts for watches at the highest technological level, with high accuracy, which were considered the best. Among such projects was the millionometer, which actually became the most accurate device in the watch industry. The analogues that existed then, based on the British system of measures, could not provide such accuracy. After three years, Antoine came up with a way to wind a watch without special keys, and in 1847 a crown appeared among his developments. However, the successors of this remarkable master and inventor did not lag behind him, and throughout the existence of the enterprise they have hundreds of international patents for inventions on their account.
Thanks to all this, LeCoultre&Co has become a leading manufacturer of chronometers of the highest complexity and accuracy, literally within a few years. By 1860, the company employed one hundred people, and by 1890, 125 sizes of mechanisms (calibers) were already in production. Naturally, the grown-up sons Eli, Paul and Benjamin joined their father's business. With their help, quite complex devices appeared in the company's product line - chronographs, repeaters and calendars. Later, by 1899, Antoine's grandson, the son of Elie - Jacques-David, entered the business, and LeCoultre acquired the status of a leader in the Jou Valley. However, Swiss watch brands are constantly cooperating with each other, which allows the entire industry to develop.
